The shortage of food for a substantial proportion of the world's population is a problem which has been challenging our society for a long time. In the 1972-1974 period an estimated 1.3 billion people subsisted in less developed countries with dietary energy supplies under the minimum nutritional requirements, and the current outlook is for a widening gap between needs and food supplies. Although progress has been made in production oriented research, such as the development of high yielding crop varieties and of better way to control pests and diseases, there is still a need for additional means to increase the world food supply. The objectives of this paper are as follows: 1) to define the problems and its relevance for developing countries; 2) to... |

For rural areas in which large scale industrial and resource development projects are located, the need for timely projections of the magnitude and location of economic, demographic, fiscal and other likely impacts is clearly apparent. The purpose of this paper is to describe a computerized model for projecting the effects of large scale developments on business activity, personal income, employment, population, requirements for selected public and quasi-public services, and public sector costs and revenues and to demonstrate the utility of the model for projecting local area impacts. The structure, data base, and interrelationships of each of the model's six major components are described. Its validity in simulating economic and demographic changes at... |

During a recent expedition to the Burgers Mountains and Mt. Kegum, Papua New Guinea, several collections were made of a Vaccinium that appeared to be undescribed. With Sleumer’s revision (1967) the new Vaccinium keys out to the section Oarianthe Schltr. and then to V. oranjense J. J. S. (p. 767, lead 41). It may be fitted in the key as follows: 41. Leaves coriaceous and ± stiff, margin markedly revolute. — Corolla ventricose-urceolate or ovoid-globose, (6 —)6.5— 10 by 5-8 mm Ø. 41a. Small epiphyte or terrestrial, then creeping and ascending to 10 cm with rooting branchlets. Leaves when dry white-glaucous above, veins and veinlets obscure. Calyx distinctly lobed to nearly its base. Corolla pale pink to red, ventricose-urceolate, 5 — 6 mm Ø. Filaments laxly... |

Re-examination of a collection of bats from Surinam in the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, uncovered a specimen representing the Phyllostomatid bat Chiroderma trinitatum Goodwin, 1958. This species does not appear in the monograph of the Chiroptera of Surinam by Husson (1962), nor in his more recent works on the mammals of that country (1973; 1978). The present specimen therefore seems to be the first record from Surinam. It is a young adult female, captured after it had flown into a house at night on 1-II-1967, by H. Nijssen at Ligorio, a village on the river Gran Rio about 16 km southwest of Djoemoe in the Brokopondo District. It has been preserved in alcohol, with extracted skull, and is registered as ZMA 10.136. IDENTIFICATION In a recent paper dealing... |

The use of animal traction as a source of on-farm power has often been regarded as a logical and appropriate approach for improving Sahelian agriculture. Animal power, it is argued, enables the farmer to execute timelier agricultural operations and to overcome the seasonal labor constraints which inhibit agricultural production. Furthermore, by increasing total production and returns to farm labor animal traction makes possible the attainment of food self-sufficiency and an increased marketable surplus. There has been a relatively long history of attempts to introduce animal traction in the Sahel, but in spite of the proposed theoretical benefits resulting from its use, the many efforts of integrating animal traction into the traditional farming systems... |

The genus Calliphara is described. Its 15 species and 6 additional subspecies are classified into 4 species-groups on the basis of the morphology of the male genitalia, and a key is provided for their separation. Calliphara solomonensis sp. nov. from the Solomon Is. and C. vollenhoveni sp. nov. from the Bismarck Archipelago are described. A synonymic catalogue of all species-group taxa within the genus is given. Fifteen lectotype designations are made. The history and relationships of Calliphara are discussed. Notacalliphara gen. nov. is founded for Calliphara rostrata Distant, and Notacalliphara pseudofasciata sp. nov. from New Guinea is described. Paracalliphara gen. nov. is founded for Calliphara flagrans (Walker). |

The characters previously used for the distinction of the species of Acrometopa are reviewed and modified differential diagnoses are given. Neotypes for A. macropoda (Burmeister) and A. servillea (Brullé) and a lectotype for A. syriaca Brunner von Wattenwyl are designated. From the Aegean island of Ikaría A. cretensis daedali nov. subsp. is described, and a key to the species and subspecies is given. The geographical variation within A. macropoda is described and discussed. A critical review of previous records in literature, together with the addition of new distributional data from Greece, has brought more logic in the known distributional pattern of the species. |

A full taxonomic treatment of Kajewskiella is given, including a key. A second species, K. polyantha is described as new. Systematic relationships, inflorescence morphology, and the nature of the zygomorphic flowers are discussed. A complete survey of this latter feature in the Rubiaceae is included. The genus is tentatively placed in the tribe Condamineeae. |

Redescriptions are given of the Sumatran Paradoxosomatidae described by Silvestri, 1895, and previously referred to the genus Strongylosoma Brandt, 1833. S. inerme Silv. is referred to the genus Dajakina Jeekel, 1963 (Orthomorphini). S. filum Silv. is made the type-species of the new genus Margaritosoma, which includes also S. nanum Silv. and Oxidus sequens Chamberlin, 1945, the latter from Java. For S. vellutatum Silv. the new genus Echinopeltis is proposed. Margaritosoma and Echinopeltis are both referable to the Sulciferini. S. infaustum, S. trifasciatum, S. modiglianii and S. simillimum are referred to the genus Sundanina Attems, 1914. S. elongatum Silv. is referred to the genus Sundaninella _ Jeekel, 1968. For S. dentatum Silv. the new genus Batakina... |
